Surge Protectors: What They Do and Why You Need One

Modern homes and businesses depend on electronic equipment every day. Computers, televisions, smart home systems, saunas, hot tubs, and electric vehicle (EV) chargers all contain sensitive electronic components that can be damaged by electrical surges.

A surge protector helps reduce that risk by redirecting excess voltage away from connected equipment. While no surge protector can prevent every type of electrical damage—especially damage caused by a direct lightning strike—it can provide an important layer of protection for your home, business, and valuable equipment.

What Is a Power Surge?

A power surge is a brief increase in electrical voltage. Under normal conditions, outlets and electrical circuits provide a relatively steady voltage. During a surge, the voltage rises above that normal level, sometimes for only a few nanoseconds or milliseconds.

Power surges may be caused by:

  • Lightning strikes

  • Utility company equipment problems

  • Power outages and power restoration

  • Faulty or damaged wiring

  • Large appliances switching on and off

  • Problems with power lines

  • Electrical system overloads

Even a small surge can gradually weaken electronic components. A larger surge may cause immediate and permanent damage.

What Does a Surge Protector Do?

A surge protector is designed to limit the amount of voltage that reaches connected equipment. Many models use components called metal oxide varistors, or MOVs, which redirect excess electrical energy away from sensitive devices.

For example, if a surge travels through an electrical circuit, a surge protection device can help send much of that excess energy toward the grounding system instead of allowing it to pass directly into a television, computer, control board, or charger.

Surge protectors do not stop electricity. Instead, they help control excess voltage and reduce the energy that reaches connected equipment.

Surge Protector vs. Power Strip

A power strip and a surge protector are not the same thing.

A basic power strip provides additional outlets. It may include an on/off switch or circuit breaker, but it does not necessarily protect against voltage surges.

A true surge protector should provide information about features such as:

  • Joule rating

  • Clamping voltage

  • Response time

  • Safety certifications

  • Protection-status indicator

Before purchasing one, review the product specifications to confirm that it is designed for surge protection rather than simply providing extra outlets.

Why Surge Protection Matters for Saunas

Saunas often include more than a heater. Many modern systems have electronic controls, digital displays, timers, lighting systems, temperature sensors, audio equipment, Wi-Fi connectivity, and control boards.

These electronic components can be sensitive to voltage fluctuations and surges. Damage to a control board or digital interface may prevent the sauna from operating properly, even if the heating element itself is unaffected.

Because sauna heaters can draw substantial electrical current, they should not be connected to an ordinary plug-in power strip or household surge protector. Saunas typically require a dedicated circuit and proper installation in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and local electrical codes.

A qualified electrician can help determine whether a suitable surge protective device should be installed at the electrical panel or as part of the sauna’s dedicated circuit. Any protection used with a sauna should be properly rated for the equipment and environment.

Protecting Hot Tubs and Spas

Hot tubs contain several electronic and electrical components, including:

  • Control panels

  • Circuit boards

  • Pumps

  • Heaters

  • Sensors

  • LED lighting

  • Water-care systems

  • Wi-Fi and automation modules

A power surge can damage these components and potentially leave the hot tub unusable. Hot tubs also operate in wet environments, making proper electrical protection especially important.

Hot tubs should be installed on properly sized, dedicated circuits with the required ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protection. GFCI protection and surge protection serve different purposes: a GFCI helps protect people from electrical shock, while a surge protective device helps reduce damage from voltage spikes. One does not replace the other.

Never use an indoor power strip or ordinary extension cord with a hot tub. For additional surge protection, consult a qualified electrician about a properly rated device installed according to the hot tub manufacturer’s requirements and local codes.

Surge Protection for EV Chargers

Electric vehicle chargers, also called electric vehicle supply equipment or EVSE, contain electronic components that manage charging and communicate with the vehicle. These may include:

  • Charging control boards

  • Circuitry that regulates voltage and current

  • Communication systems

  • User displays

  • Network and Wi-Fi modules

  • Safety monitoring equipment

  • Contactors and sensors

A surge can damage the EV charger, its electronics, or—in some situations—the vehicle’s charging system.

Many EV chargers include built-in safety and surge-related features, but these features do not necessarily provide complete protection from every electrical event. Homeowners may benefit from a whole-home surge protective device or additional protection installed on the charger’s dedicated circuit.

EV chargers should be installed by a qualified electrician using the correct circuit size, disconnects, grounding, and overcurrent protection. Do not connect a high-powered EV charger to a basic power strip, and do not use an extension cord unless the charger manufacturer specifically permits it and the cord is appropriately rated.

Important Surge Protector Features

Joule Rating

The joule rating indicates how much energy a surge protector can absorb before it may no longer function correctly. A higher rating generally means the device can handle more cumulative surge energy.

Small electronics may require less protection, while valuable home entertainment systems, computers, networking equipment, and electronic control systems may benefit from higher-rated protection. For saunas, hot tubs, and EV chargers, however, the device must also be rated for the equipment, circuit, voltage, and installation method—not just selected based on joule rating alone.

Clamping Voltage

Clamping voltage is the level at which a surge protector begins redirecting excess electricity. A lower clamping voltage generally means the device activates sooner, although product quality, certification, and correct installation are equally important.

Response Time

Response time describes how quickly a surge protector reacts to a voltage spike. Most quality devices respond extremely quickly, but this specification can be useful when comparing products.

Safety Certification

Look for recognized safety and testing marks, such as UL 1449 in the United States. Certification does not guarantee protection from every surge, but it indicates that the product has been tested according to established standards.

Protection Indicator

Many surge protection devices include an indicator showing whether protection is still active. Surge-protection components can wear out over time, even when the device continues supplying power.

Should You Install Whole-Home Surge Protection?

Whole-home surge protection is installed at the electrical panel by a qualified electrician. It can help reduce surge exposure throughout the property, including on circuits serving:

  • Computers and televisions

  • HVAC equipment

  • Smart home systems

  • Saunas

  • Hot tubs

  • EV chargers

  • Appliances

  • Security systems

  • Network equipment

Whole-home protection can work alongside properly selected point-of-use protection. For high-power equipment such as hot tubs, saunas, and EV chargers, a professional can determine whether additional protection is needed at the equipment or dedicated circuit.

Do Surge Protectors Protect Against Lightning?

A surge protector may reduce the risk of damage caused by some electrical surges, but it cannot guarantee protection from a direct lightning strike.

Lightning can introduce extremely high levels of energy into electrical, telephone, cable, Ethernet, and other wiring. If severe weather is approaching, unplug sensitive portable electronics when it is safe and practical to do so. Do not attempt to disconnect hardwired saunas, hot tubs, or EV chargers yourself; follow the manufacturer’s instructions and consult a qualified electrician.

When Should You Replace a Surge Protector?

Surge protectors do not last forever. Their internal components can wear down as they absorb electrical surges.

Replace a surge protector if:

  • The protection indicator light turns off

  • It has burn marks, melting, or discoloration

  • It smells like burnt plastic

  • The casing is cracked or damaged

  • It has been involved in a major electrical event

  • The plug or connection is loose

  • The manufacturer recommends replacement

  • It is several years old and its condition or rating is unknown

For permanently installed protection serving a sauna, hot tub, or EV charger, have the system inspected if the equipment experiences a significant surge, lightning event, unusual shutdown, or electronic malfunction.

Tips for Using Surge Protection Safely

  1. Use the correct type of protection. Match the device to the voltage, amperage, and equipment it serves.

  2. Do not connect surge protectors to one another. Daisy-chaining can create an overload and safety hazard.

  3. Never use basic power strips with hot tubs, saunas, or EV chargers.

  4. Use dedicated circuits where required. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions and local electrical codes.

  5. Do not confuse GFCI protection with surge protection. Both may be important, but they serve different purposes.

  6. Keep protection devices dry and ventilated.

  7. Use grounded electrical systems. Surge protection may not operate correctly without proper grounding.

  8. Inspect equipment regularly. Look for heat damage, loose connections, warning lights, or unusual operation.

  9. Have high-power equipment installed by a qualified electrician.

  10. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. This is especially important for saunas, hot tubs, and EV charging equipment.

Protect Your Electronics Before a Surge Happens

Replacing a damaged computer, hot tub control board, sauna controller, or EV charger can be expensive and inconvenient. A properly selected surge protection system can help reduce the risk of electrical damage and extend the life of the equipment you rely on.

For everyday electronics, a quality plug-in surge protector may be appropriate. For high-power equipment such as saunas, hot tubs, and EV chargers, professional installation, dedicated circuits, GFCI protection where required, and whole-home or panel-mounted surge protection may provide a safer and more effective solution.
